Wi-Fi Protected Setup (WPS) is a standard for easy and secure establishment of a wireless home network, created by the Wi-Fi Alliance and officially launched on January 8, 2007.

The goal of the WPS protocol is to simplify the process of configuring security on wireless networks, thus it was first named ‘Wi-Fi Simple Config’. The protocol is meant to allow home users who know little of wireless security and may be intimidated by the available security options to configure Wi-Fi Protected Access, which is supported by all Wi-Fi certified devices.

The standard achieves its goal by putting much emphasis into usability and security, and the concept is implemented through four usage models that enable a user to establish a home network.

Let’s take the D-Link DIR-655 wireless router as an example.

Unconfigured mode:

By default, after setting up your wireless device with WPS and Push Button Configuration(PBC), the only step you need to do is press the WPS button on the side of the router. You would not need to create a wireless network name (SSID) nor a security key.

Configured mode:

You would need to configure the following sections in your router, Wireless Network Settings and Wireless Security Mode. Both sections must be configured including a wireless security key. Save settings and Reboot.

Note: After configuring the DIR-655 Wireless Network Settings you will need to enter in a Personal Identification Number (PIN) that is generated from your wireless adapter in order to establish a proper connection between client and host.

Note: Make sure that your wireless security setting is set to being WPA instead of WEP.

Enabling WEP will disable the wireless N feature of your D-Link router. WPA encryption should be used by default as it is a stronger encryption than WEP. WEP encryption on DIR series routers should only be used if you have other devices that do not support WPA.

In the event that you must use WEP, these steps will fix the certificate error.

Step 1: Click on Start, then Control Panel

Step 2: Click on Network Connections

Step 3: Right-click the Wireless Network Connection and select Properties.

Step 4: Click the Wireless networks tab

Step 5: Select your wireless Network name under Preferred networks and click onProperties.

Step 6: Click on the Authentication tab

Step 7: Uncheck the box that Enables 802.1x authentication and click OK.

WISH is short for Wireless Intelligent Stream Handling, a technology developed to enhance your experience, when using a wireless network(such as D-Link DIR-655), by prioritizing the traffic of different applications.

Step 1: Open your web browser and type in the IP address of the router ( by default).

Step 2: Enter the username (admin) and password (blank by default), and then click Log In.

Step 3: Click Advanced from the top and select WISH, from the left side.

Step 4: Check the box next to Enable WISH.

Step 5: After WISH is enabled, you can configure it, using the Priority Classifiers and WISH Rules.

WISH Rules

A WISH Rule identifies a specific data flow and assigns a priority to that flow. For most applications, the priority classifiers ensure the right priorities and specific WISH Rules are not required.
WISH supports overlaps between rules. If more than one rule matches for a specific data flow, the rule with the highest priority will be used.

Create a name for the rule that is meaningful to you. Also, ensure that you apply a check mark to the rule.
These check marks tell the router the rule is active.

The priority of the data flow is entered here. Four priorities are defined:

•BK: Background (least urgent).

•BE: Best Effort.

•VI: Video.

•VO: Voice (most urgent).

The protocol used by the data.

Host 1 IP Range
The rule applies to a flow of data for which one computer´s IP address falls within the range set here.

Host 1 Port Range
The rule applies to a flow of data for which host 1´s port number is within the range set here.

Host 2 IP Range
The rule applies to a flow of data for which the other computer´s IP address falls within the range set here.

Host 2 Port Range
The rule applies to a flow of data for which host 2´s port number is within the range set here.

The PSP (PlayStation® Portable) only supports WPA, not WPA2. If you are using WPA/Auto, you may need to lock the router to WPA only (firmware 1.07 or higher). This will allow you to connect to your PSP. To switch to WPA only, follow these steps:

Step 1: Open a web browser and type the IP address of the DIR series(D-Link DIR-655) router into the address bar (default is

Step 2: The default username is admin (all lower case) and the default password is blank (nothing). Click on OK.

Step 3: Click on the Setup tab at the top and then click on Wireless Settings on the lefthand side.

Step 4: From the Wireless Security Mode dropdown menu, select WPA-Personal.

Step 5: From the WPA dropdown menu, select WPA Only.

Step 6: Under Pre-shared Key, enter the desired Pre-Shared Key.

Step 7: Click on Save Settings to save your settings.
